Create a CTA Station Sign—X-Carve Workshop

Mind+Hand’s makerspace has a really cool machine called an Inventables X-Carve. What is it exactly? The technical name for the X-Carve would be CNC Router. And what are those? Basically, it mixes a router, a power tool that is sort of like a drill that is mounted vertically that you move by hand to carve wood, and motors connected to a control board, which connects to a computer that tell the motors where to move. Confused? Perfect!

In this workshop, we’ll break down the concept of how the X-Carve works—it is not that hard to understand when you see it in person. And of course, we need to make something!

A popular item we made recently on the X-Carve were engraved wood signs that looked like the CTA Pulaski Orange Line Stop for the Taste of Pulaski Festival. We got a lot of requests from people to make a CTA Station Sign, but with a different station on it.

So here is your chance! In the workshop you’ll pick one of Chicago’s 146 El stations and re-create its sign by engraving it with some nice quality wood. We will do everything from actually designing the sign with graphic design software so you can also customize the sign’s layout, text, or really whatever you’d like! Maybe you want to make up a new station? Sure! Then we’ll load our designs into the X-Carve’s software, setup the materials to be cut, and press the GO button.

WORKSHOP IS FREE ONLY IF YOU PRE-REGISTER! FOLLOW THE LINK ON THE RIGHT TO SIGN UP VIA EVENTBRITE.

This event page is for the October 22nd workshop, but you can register for all three workshop dates (Oct 17, Oct 22, Nov 5) from the same link on the right side of the page.
